House Officially Ending After 8 Seasons on FOX

After 8 seasons on the air, it’s now official. This will be the last season of House.

In a written statement by House Executive Producers David Shore, Katie Jacobs and Hugh Laurie, they made the announcement to the media and fans. Here is the official statement:

After much deliberation, the producers of House M.D. have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last.  By April this year they will have completed 177 episodes, which is about 175 more than anyone expected back in 2004.

The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years – but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to everyone involved.

Since it began, House has aspired to offer a coherent and satisfying world in which everlasting human questions of ethics and emotion, logic and truth, could be examined, played out, and occasionally answered.  This sounds like fancy talk, but it really isn’t.  House has, in its time, intrigued audiences around the world in vast numbers, and has shown that there is a strong appetite for television drama that relies on more than prettiness or gun play.
But now that time is drawing to a close.  The producers have always imagined House as an enigmatic creature;  he should never be the last one to leave the party.  How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air.
The producers can never sufficiently express their gratitude to the hundreds of dedicated artists and technicians who have given so generously of their energy and talent to make House the show it has been – and perhaps will continue to be for some time, on one cable network or another.
The makers of House would also like to thank Fox Broadcasting and Universal Television for supporting the show with patience, imagination and large quantities of good taste.  The Studio-As-Evil-Adversary is one of the many clichés that House has managed to avoid, and for that the cast and crew are deeply grateful.
Lastly, the audience:  some have come and some have gone, obviously.  This is to be expected in the life of any show.  But over the course of the last eight years, the producers of House have felt immensely honored to be the subject of such close attention by an intelligent, discriminating, humane and thoughtful – not to mention numerous – audience.  Even the show’s detractors have been flattering in their way.  Making the show has felt like a lively and passionate discussion about as many different subjects as could possibly be raised in 177 hours.  The devotion and generosity of our viewers has been marvelous to behold.
So, finally, everyone at House will bid farewell to the audience and to each other with more than a few tears, but also with a deep feeling of gratitude for the grand adventure they have been privileged to enjoy for the last eight years.  If the show lives on somewhere, with somebody, as a fond memory, then that is a precious feat, of which we will always be proud.
Everybody Lies.

House debuted on FOX in November of 2004. During its run, the series captured several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations and wins, including for its star Hugh Laurie.

My favorite moment was when it ended up being Lupus.

Everybody lies so they’re lying and we’ll have another season, right? Right?

My favorite moment will be when i see Cuddy walking in again for the series finale. Show couldn´t make it without her, sadly.

  • I_love_House_MD

Sadly the show was ruined by Cuddy and the awful huddy nonsense! I really hope I won’t see Cuddy anymore, I want to enjoy my show till the end

Actually the show was ruined by its horrible writing. Lisa, Cuddy or House/Cuddy don´t have anything to do with it. Lisa Edelstein is a terrific actress and she has a mind-blowing chemistry with Hugh Laurie. Scripts in season 7 didn´t do them justice. And the thing is the show has dropped to an embarrasing 2.5 after she walked out.

I am sorry to see the show end but S8 had really been struggling and it is really time for the show to depart while it still has some claims to dignity and decent story telling.

I am thankful for all the interesting episodes the House Team has brought us over the years and in awe of the great acting by Hugh Laurie and in wonderful support Robert Sean Leonard and Lisa Edelstein.  Jesse Spencer has been a stand out too.  I will miss seeing them on my screen.

IMO the show really suffered from Cuddys departure so I hope that the finale does in someway involve Cuddy and a return by Lisa Edelstein to the show.  Wilson and Cuddy were the most significant and important relationships that House had in the last 7 years and I would like all three of them to be there for the finale.   I would not feel that the show had ended properly unless Cuddy was there at the end.

“Everybody Lies” pfff they should change their disc.

  • Belle

Well I would like to enjoy the end of the show so I actually do hope that Cuddy will be a part of the finale.  Both the character and the actress deserve to be there.

  • Anoif

I only have one hope for the final arc and that is that they bring back Cuddy/Lisa Edelstein. IMHO it’s the only shot they have of preserving the shows legacy after all the damage they have done over the past 18mths.

  • The Doctor

While it is difficult to imagine the end of House, it was sadly inevitable. Several poor decisions made by the producers and the network led to the decline in viewership. Additionally, as much as some may want to deny that Lisa Edelstein’s Cuddy was an intregal part of the show, the fact remains that number don’t lie. The poor writing mid-season 7 as well as a dismal set of episodes in S8 have already led most fans to change the channel.

That being said….Hugh Laurie has done nothing by bring excellence to the screen in a character that captured the attention of viewers for right seasons. His talents are immeasurable and will be hard to match. It’s a bittersweet end to a show that offered so much in it’s early years but failed to properly expolre and expand on its potential. Cast and crew have done an amazing job! The producers….not so much, imo. Their arrogance and stubborn nature got the best of them in the end I’m afraid. It’s sad really. The way to at least save face in the end is to afford the opportunity to Lisa Edelstein andeven Jennifer Morrison to return. That is the honorable and respectful thing to do at this point, because at least for me, the show cannot properly end without the former Dean of Medicine who was written as the individual who gave House his one true chance in life on both a personal AND professional level.

It’s the end of an era. I’ll miss House like crazy and I hope Cuddy will be part of the finale. The show could’t recover since she left. Hiring two non experienced actresses to replace her and putting Foreman as the dean wasn’t a good option. I’m enjoying some episodes this season but i need to admit the show lost its brilliance in season 6. 8 years is an amazing run.

began watching House midway through season one, and watched it
religiously until season 4. I honestly thought it was done around then,
but to my surprise and enjoyment it did pick up again around season 6.
There have certainly been low points (thirteen, huddy,TAUB) but also
incredible high points (three stories, and even more recently, nobody’s
fault). I’m glad House is calling it quits while it is still relevant
    and loved.
Honestly it is really the fandom which ruined House & the Fan-fun. The discussion weren`t about House &  the storylines anymore. It became a stupid ship-war of a bunch of very vocal, rabid internet people who follow the logic that the show is only about their fav. couple and when it is not, the show is bad. LEs exit made it worse. I only have to have a look in the comment section of the TVline House-ending announcement article. They don`t show respect to the show they proclaim to love neither to the actors or its creators.  A gréat show like House doesn`t need fans like that.
The show was allways about Houses journey to deal with his life. It was a bumby ride but still one of the finest hours on TV.
So thank you House & Hugh Laurie & foremost for eight pretty respectable years. You
will be missed.Go out of the bang! :)

Why was the show doing good while LE was there? Are you kidding me?

  • Little Big Man

The show got old and it was the same old thing every week. It was very predictable.

  • chmeleon

In addition to Hugh Laurie’s hilarious sarcasm and biting discourse with his “inferior” colleagues, I thoroughly appreciated the show’s focus on medical accuracy. I have been an every week and/or dvr recorder fan. I haven’t missed an episode. It was a House episode that helped me ask the right questions to a doctor concerning live donor transplants. I am very saddened that House will be no more. I would be willing to join a group that will focus on getting House renewed. Maybe with a short sabbatical the cast and crew will be ready to give it another go.
