Exclusive: Modern Family Star Reid Ewing Talks About Dylan, Being a Rock-star, and the Dunphy Family

By: Adam Wright

Modern Family has been a breakout hit for ABC with its hilarious cast, and brilliant writing.

TVDoneWright.com was lucky enough to catch up with one of its star. Reid Ewing plays Dylan, the rocker boyfriend to Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hayland).

Adam: First off congratulations on Modern Family being a mega-hit. How does it feel to be apart of this show?

Reid: I feel very lucky. I love the show and it’s great they keep using my character.

***

Adam: How did you first get involved as the role of “Dylan”?

Reid: They needed a guy who was 6’2” and could lift a 185lb. man (because Dylan carries Phil to the couch after he hurts his back) so that cut out like 90% of the competition. Then I guess the executive producers liked my take on the character out of their choices.

Adam: How nervous were you auditioning? How did you get through it?

Reid: Wasn’t nervous. I didn’t think I’d get it but I was glad to be there.

***

Adam: You get the call that you got the role, what was your first reaction?

Reid: I’m always excited when I hear I booked a role. I had no idea it would become recurring.

***

Adam: Dylan is the stereotypical rock-star. How does the character differ from your real personality?

Reid:  I don’t party like a rock-star. And I don’t have a rock-star posse.

***

Adam: A lot of your air-time is with your on-air girlfriend Haley Dunphy, played by Sarah Hyland. You two seem to have great chemistry together, what’s it like to work with Sarah?

Reid: She is very talented and has a crazy beautiful unique look

***

Adam: Phil Dunphy is your on-air in-law. How would you describe Phil?

Reid: I think Ty Burrell described his character best in an interview. “He’s like a talking dog”. He’s eager and lovable.

***

Adam: Would you like to have him (Phil) as a real in-law?

Reid: Definitely. He loads of fun.

***

Adam: I read somewhere that you wrote both songs we’ve seen you perform on the show. “Into the Moonlight (Do Me)” and “I’ll Be Your Vampire”. How does it feel to have your songs featured on a hit-show?

Reid: Insanely amazing. Performing for everybody made me want to change careers and become a musician.

***

Adam: You shot a music-video for the song “Into the Moonlight (Do Me)”. How was that?

Reid: So fun. I met one of my current roommates on that set. It was great getting to poke fun at how seriously rock pop can take itself.

***

Adam: “Cam” helped your band out with his drum performance during last week’s episode. What do you think of Eric Stonestreet’s drum-skills?

Reid: He’s crazy talented. Pretty much good at everything.

***

Adam: And his drum-solo? (laughs)

Reid: There wasn’t a bad take

***

Adam: What can you tell us about the rest of the season? What can we expect from Dylan?

Reid: Dylan has one more episode for the season. It’s a brilliantly written episode about the hassle of air travel.

***

Adam: Finally, I ask this to everyone I interview, what have you been watching on TV lately?

Reid: Big Love. I love Chole Sevigny.

Special thanks to Reid for taking the time to answer our questions. You can catch him and the rest of the cast on Modern Family, airing Wednesday nights on ABC.
