LOST Recap: Recon

By: Alex Solak

Finally a Sawyer episode, I was wondering what he was up to.  Open with an obligatory shot of him half naked with a girl…

Island-less Timeline

  • “Detective James” is now working for the LAPD.  Miles is his partner.
  • He’s looking for a Anthony Cooper, and seems to be hiding things from his partner.
  • Sawyer goes to the bar on a blind date with a red-head Miles knows.  It’s Charlotte, Daniel Faraday’s lover before she died when the island was skipping people through time.
  • They hit it off nicely, and get right to bed.
  • Post-coitus, she goes to get a t-shirt in his drawer.  She finds a binder called ‘Sawyer’ inside is an old picture of a happy family.  Sawyer looses his cool and kicks her out.
  • The next morning, Miles is pissed at Sawyer, but not about the date. He found out Sawyer went to Australia, and not to Palm Springs like he had said.  Miles demands to know why.
  • Sawyer explains… nothing.  “That’s no of your damn business!”  Miles drops him as a partner.  Sawyer responds typically and punches out a mirror.
  • Back at home Sawyer returns to a depressing Bachelor pad.  He sits around depressed for a bit, then heads out.
  • He goes to Charlotte’s place with a flower, with hopes of making amends, and gets shot down.
  • Later, Miles and Sawyer are hanging out.
  • “Who’s Sawyer?” asks Miles.  The name comes from the con-man that ruined his parents, and led to their deaths.  Sawyer has been hunting this con-man, and plans to kill him.
  • -CRASH- car swipes them, it’s being chased by a patrol car.
  • The car stops and someone runs out of it.  Sawyer chases her down and finds out it’s Kate.
  • On the island
  • Claire going is through her things, playing with her creepy fake baby, hanging out with Kate.
  • Evil Locke is leading his followers through the jungle.  He promises to take care of them.
  • Locke says they’d be on the island for a couple days, Sawyer wants to know why they aren’t leaving.
  • Locke pulls Sawyer aside and admits he’s the smoke monster.  He killed the others at the temple because it’s ‘Kill or be killed’
  • Locke is sending Sawyer to Hydra Island to recon for other Followers of Jacob, and the plane that brought them there.
  • Sawyer solo-canoes to the island.  Doesn’t look too tired.  He explores the old Other’s camp where he and Kate were held captive together. It brings back some memories.
  • Back in the camp, Kate talks to zombie Sayid.  “Are you ok?”  <Sketchy eyes> “No”  So at least he knows he’s damaged.
  • Claire jumps Kate, almost knifes her in the neck.  Sayid watches calmly.
  • Locke comes over and breaks it up, gives Claire a good smack.  She smartens up.
  • Kate is sufficiently freaked out by everyone.
  • Locke tries to comfort her.
  • “Have you ever had an enemy?  Someone you needed to hate?”  Locke gave Claire someone to hate to keep her motivated.
  • “Very insightful of you, especially for a dead man.”
  • Locke is opening up to Claire.  “My mother was crazy.”  She scarred him emotionally somehow.  It really messed him up.  He points this out because “Now Aaron has a crazy mother too.”  Is he implying Claire should ‘fix the problem’ <nudgenudgewinkwink>… ya know?… I’m suggesting Kate should kill Claire.  There I said it.
  • Claire confronts Kate again, this time apologizing.  She thanks Kate for taking care of Aaron.  Manic much?
  • Over on Hydra island, more wandering leads to the plane.  Sawyer inspects it as if he’s a certified technician.  He finds a campfire that’s still warm (also when did he learn tracking skills?).
  • Sawyer follows a path in the sand of something being dragged.  It leads him to a pile of rotting corpses… gross.
  • He sees someone running away, and chases.  He tackles her.
    “Who are you?”
    “I’m the only one left.”
  • The woman is the last one left alive apparently.  She was away from camp, and she heard screaming.  When she came back to camp they were all dead.  Sawyer is willing to take her back to the group.
  • “Thank God.”
“Trust me, God’s got nothing to do with it.”
  • Sawyer asked where she was going.  She says Guam.  He pulls a gun on her.  Apparently he can also spot a liar.  A man of many talents.
  • She signals and men with guns appear from the woods.  At this point I have to wonder who keeps bringing ammunition to the island?  I never see people stocking up, or even reloading.
  • Anyway, they take Sawyer to the dock, and the submarine.  They pass people setting up  equipment.  No explanation as to what it does.  Sawyer jumps in the sub.
  • Walking through the sub they go past a locked door that Sawyer points out.  Clearly this will be important at some point.
  • Whitmore introduces himself.  Sawyer only knows Whitmore from when Whitmore sent an assassin team after Ben Linus and killed a bunch of people.  They clearly don’t trust each other much.
  • Sawyer strikes a deal with Whitmore.  He’ll bring Locke to the island so Whitmore can kill him.  All he wants is safe passage off the island for everyone that wants to go.  Whitmore agrees.
  • Sawyer boats back to the island.  Tells Locke the passengers are all dead.  Then tells Locke all about Whitmore being on the island.  Double-cross burn!
  • Oh and apparently the equipment they are setting up is a sonic fence.  It’s the thing that keeps out the smoke monster (Locke).
  • Sawyer’s plan is to let Whitmore battle Locke, and sneak away during the confusion.  He’s going to take the sub.

And next week, a RICHARD EPISODE.  I’m so excited.  That character is probably the most interesting (and has the longest backstory) of anyone on the island besides Jacob and the Nemesis.
