LOST Recap: “LA X” (Season Premiere)

By: Alex Solak

MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT

Here’s the plot highlights:

  • Since they blew up an nuclear bomb they seem to have created two realities. There are two timelines now the viewers are following (and the staple flashbacks are almost non-existant)
    • One timeline running from where they are supposed to crash in the first episode, but this time they don’t crash.  And oddly enough, the island is sunk to the bottom of the ocean, Dharma barracks and all.
    • The second timeline runs from right after the evil Locke tricks Ben into killing Jacob, the spirit of the island.
  • Lots of Smoke monster action tonight.
  • We find out that evil Locke (not to be confused with dead Locke) IS the smoke monster AND Jacob’s Nemesis.
  • The smoke monster can be held a bay with a circle of some kind of ashes.  The followers of Jacob keep it on hand when on the island.  It’s likely the same ashes that were spread around Jacob’s cabin.
  • Bullets can’t hurt the smoke monster or evil Locke.
  • In timeline two (on the island) everyone is thrown into the future when the bomb goes off, including Juliet who survives at the bottom of the hole.  Sawyer leads the effort to dig her out, but she eventually dies from her injuries.
  • Juliet tells Sawyer that ‘It worked’.  Possibly meaning she knows that (in the other timeline) their plane actually never crashed.  It’s unclear how she would know.
  • Hurley DOES in fact speak with dead people.  He talks with a deceased Jacob.  Jacob tells him he has to take Sayid to the Temple to save him.
  • The Temple is at the center of a large, ancient wall.
  • Inside the Temple is the ‘other Others’.  They look to have been there for a very, very long time. The temple is a vaguely Mayan design.
  • Sayid is taken to ‘The Spring’.  Note, this is the same place a young Ben was taken to be healed.  Both times the Others warned the procedure was dangerous. In Ben’s case they warned he would be ‘changed’.
  • Sayid drowns, but after a long time (over an hour) comes back to life.
  • When the ‘other Others’ learn Jacob has died, they panic and barricade their Temple.  The launch a rocket into the air to alert everyone on the island.
  • Richard and the other followers of Jacob, back at the statue, freak out when they see it.
  • Evil Locke (the Nemesis) walks out of the statue. Lock says to Richard, “good to see you out of those chains.”  Then promptly beats Richard down and carries him away.

Important Quotes:

  • Hurley on plane “I’m the luckiest guy alive”
  • Nemesis Locke to Richard “Good to see you out of those chains.”
  • Sawyer to Juliet “You hit the bomb?! Why?”
  • Juliet “It worked”
  • Nemesis Locke “I want to go home”  (apparently home is off the island)
  • Locke (timeline 1,in airport): “They didn’t lose your father.  They only lost his body”
  • Jack (timeline 1, in airport):”Nothing is irreversible”

Questions:

First timeline:

Why is the island sunk?

Will the people come together again?

Why is Desmond still seem to be bouncing around (through time)?

Second timeline:

Where do the other Others fit in the struggle between Jacob and he nemesis.

If the smoke monster came from the temple before, why are they armed against it?

What did it mean that the water in the Spring was dirty?

Why is water so important to the mythology? (it was once used by Ben to summon the smoke monster)

What is the black ash?

My ridiculous speculation:

Maybe they develop these two timelines, and at the end Jack is forced to choose one of the realities?  Maybe?
