Supernatural Recap: Swap Meat

Supernatural Recap: Swap Meat

By: Adrian Sannen

The old switcheroo. A device that’s all too common in supernatural…or in television and film in general.  On this weeks episode of Supernatural we find out what happens when teens mess with witchcraft. We begin at the old babysitter of the Winchester boys. Every time papa John Winchester was on a case, he’d leave them with her.  Sam and Dean arrive at her house to find that she and her family had quite the ghost problem.  Her daughter lifted up her shirt to reveal the words “Murder Chyld” written across her stomach. this had to do with a witch that was buried in their basement.

When leaving the house, Dean begins to wonder what it would be like to have a wife and kid but Sam shrugs it off. This was confusing as in the past it was always Dean with a “This is our duty, no point in wondering” kind of attitude while Sam wanted to create a new life. When they go to burn the body, Sam begins hearing weird noises while Dean stays back at the hotel. Sam scurries to find out things about the witch when he’s met with a dart in his neck. A tranquilizer!

Upon waking up, Sam is confused. A police officer picks him up and tells him that his family had been worried sick. When he’s driven home he’s greeted with a mother, father and sister. In the middle of telling them that they’ve made a mistake, he catches a glimpse of himself in the car door and finds out that he’s in the body of an adolescent boy. Sam begins looking through the boy’s room and notices some star wars merchandise…”Virgin.” He says as he continues to rifle through the stuff. He finds a porno magazine under the bed and says “Frustrated virgin.”. Also under the bed, he finds a pentagram and Latin writing. “Satanic little bastard” He proclaims disappointedly.

Meanwhile, Dean and Gary (the adolescent boy in Sam’s body) go to find the witch. Gary knows exactly where the witch is buried and brings Dean to the spot.  Dean knows he’s acting funny, but Gary/Sam explains that there’s always a plan in place and how everything shouldn’t be set in stone. He goes on to say “It’s good to do a little ass kicking every now and then” Dean says that he can drink to that and they proceed to do celebratory shots.

Gary’s friends are curious as to why he’s acting so weird and Sam tries to just shrug it off and leave, but once again…he’s met with a tranquilizer dart. He wakes up tied to a chair where Gary’s friends explain that there’s a bounty on Dean’s head and that they were going to be the ones to collect it. Powerless to stop it, Sam witnesses the teens summon a demon. The demon posses the body of a teenage girl and goes to find Sam’s body.  Gary’s friend Trevor demands a reward and when the demon’s “Undying gratitude” isn’t enough kills him.

The demon goes to get Sam’s body and make him accept his fate as a satanic vessel, and almost succeeds, but Gary refuses to give it up.  The demon begins killing Dean when Gary starts exorcising the demon. with the help of dean, Gary returned the demon back to sender. They have a heart to hear with Gary about why witchcraft is bad. Sam goes on to tell the kid how he wished he had his life. Once Gary left, Sam said “I lied to the kid, his life sucks.”

This was a great episode, in the class of an early season episode, where it was a new horror each weak. On a TVDoneWright 10 point scale I give it an 8.
