Sitcom Essentials – The Top Five Episodes Ever
Escape with me if you will, to a place where you don’t work 9 to 5. A place where you just hang out in bars, coffee shops, bars below apartments, small diners, and other various establishments. Yes, the sitcom or situational comedy. Many times sitcoms have made it far too easy to escape reality and believe me, we at www.TVdoneWright.com are NOT complaining. There’s nothing better than returning from whatever place you go, be it school or work and hopping on a couch to catch your favourite sitcoms. What’s a better stress reliever than Seinfeld? Life is filled with unavoidable problems and you must live them in order to be alive, but sometimes, it’s more fun to watch other people do it (with hilarious consequences) on your TV screen.
So what makes for a good sitcom? Well, the main thing you normally see in sitcoms is a group of friends who all have different personalities. This can be seen in Seinfeld, Friends (oddly enough), Cheers, How I met your mother, The Big Bang Theory and many more. Of course, not all sitcoms follow this formula, for instance although it spawned off a group of friends, Frasier, Wings, News Radio and other similar shows revolved either around 1 character or a bunch of employees at a designated work space.
Now, if you live in Under-a-freakin-rock town, USA and you haven’t even seen any sitcoms, here’s a list of top five essential episodes of any sitcom.
#5. No. 5 belongs to How I Met Your Mother with their episode entitled “The front porch” A personal favourite episode of mine …
How I met your mother is a fantastic sitcom that always finds a way to bring something new to the table. This episode was no different. It featured a meddling Lilly Aldren (Alyson Hannigan) Who decided that main character Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) needed to be with someone that she could see herself and her husband Marshall (Jason Segel) grow old with and play board games on their front porch. In order to insure that Ted had a girlfriend who passed the front porch test, Lilly would break up Ted and his past girlfriends. It also features womanizing Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) in a night gown. What’s better than that?
#4. The fourth selection goes to Malcolm in the Middle for the episode called “Bowling”, a classic episode.
Malcolm in the Middle was a fusion of many different aspects and a great way to pass the time. In this episode, we have two different scenarios all involving bowling and what happens when Hal takes them bowling and what happens when Lois takes them bowling. Dewey didn’t go because as per usual, one of the brothers had to be in trouble.
#3. Next up, no. 3 goes to Friends with their episode entitled “The one where
Eddie moves in.” I chose this one for obvious reasons
Friends was an iconic show which will live on probably live on until the worlds end. That said, I needed to choose the episode where Phoebe sings smelly cat (of course). I think the brilliance was that she was “discovered” for that song. Thanks to friends, every time you’re in a Sarbucks with a bunch of friends you’ll hear somebody say “Hey! It’s just like on that show! You know, the one with Chandler.”
#2. The second goes to Seinfeld for their episode entitled “The contest”.
Seinfeld IS sitcoms. There would be nothing without this groundbreaking series. This episode is another example of breaking down barriers. Everyone loves racy subject matter, but it would be this episode that would truly indicate the dawn of a new era when George, Kramer, Jerry and Elaine have a bet to see who can last the longest without masturbating (Nothing compared to family guy and other shows like that, but in my opinion this paved the way.
#1. Number one on my list also belongs to Seinfeld entitled “The Soup Nazi”
This episode needs no explanation. NO SOUP FOR YOU!
And there you have it folks, my top five. Coming this season we see a new batch of sitcoms coming on the air. Keep an eye out especially for ABC’s Modern Family.
Now that you have my list, I want to hear from you. Tell me your favourite sitcom episodes or moments.
