TV Time With Tim: Five Reasons To Get the Cable Networks

by Tim Wilkins

I hate to admit this, but I do not have cable.  I know.  What kind of TV addict am I? The only excuse I have is the fact I can not afford it.  Do I miss it?  Do I want it?  That’s like asking a has-been star if they want a reality show, most do!

As I ponder my financial situation and pray for falling coins, I am going to list my reasons to get cable in no certain order.  My first reason to get cable:  Summer TV on the networks suck!  Don’t get me wrong, I love network TV, but I have had a hard time finding entertainment this summer.  When I told a friend I was watching “Big Brother,” his response was, “I’m sorry.”  All of the good shows with the most buzz are on cable from “True Blood” to “Weeds.”

Reason 2:  Choice.  With so many channels and shows, I would have ample opportunity to see what the rest of the world is talking about.  Who doesn’t like to talk about what they’re watching?  Many a conversation has been started with, “Did you see (insert tv show here) last night?”

Reason 3:  DVR.  With most cable companies, one gets a little DVR box to program and record multiple shows at one time.  My VCR will only do one.

Reason 4:  Jail time!  I could torrent, but I run the risk of being caught and persecuted.  Also I am told those downloads are full of bugs and viruses and one takes their chances.  Plus there’s the whole idea of ‘stealing.’

Reason 5:  When hanging out with friends at their cable enhanced homes, I feel like I’m the poor relative who sitting in amazement at the channels and the choices.  I also feel like I should contribute to their cable bill if I’m over all the time and watching their TV.  I mean, that ‘cable tip’ bowl sits in prominent display on their coffee table.  I can take a hint.

So while I’m digging out change in the couch cushions, why don’t you list a reason I should have cable?  Do you agree or disagree with my reasons?  Til next time, enjoy the TV you do have!

I am lucky enough to have cable, but I don’t even watch it. Reason 7: it makes the husband happy. sports, sports, sports…

    Tim,

Great piece even though I will definitely be sending my team of lawyers after you for using the words ‘tv addict’ in a sentence. But seriously, cable in the summer is overrated. Yes, HBO and Showtime are great, especially with TRUE BLOOD, HUNG, WEEDS, ENTOURAGE etc… but they’re expensive. Have you ever considered a netflix account where you can watch all these amazing shows on DVD?
