Advance Review: “Dexter” Returns For a Fourth Killer Season

(Warning: This advance review may contain minor spoilers. Be advised)

“Living the Dream”. That’s the title of the fourth season premiere of Dexter. The last time we saw our favourite serial killer, it seemed like he was living the dream. Great job, beautiful new wife, a family, and now a baby. Any man would be thrilled. But as we know, Dexter Morgan isn’t your typical man.

Within the first few minutes of the season opener, we see the two biggest storylines.

First, we see Daddy Dexter driving. Driving, looking like he hasn’t slept in nights, because well… he hasn’t. There’s a crying baby in the backseat, Harrison, named after Grandpa Harry.

Then we get a shot at the second big storylines of the season. A first look at John Lithgow’s “Trinity Killer”. Right away we see the disturbed killer in action, killing his victim in a bathtub, making her watch in a mirror as she slowly suffocates. The image of Lithgow on the comedy “3rd Rock from the Sun” quickly disappears when we see this brutal killing.

On the job, Dexter’s new life is taking a toll on him. After a blunder in court, his mistake sends a killer back on the street. A killer or as Dexter would see it, a much needed target.

The season premiere also treats us with a taste of a few sub-plots we’ll see through the season.

The biggest sub-plot is the return of Special Agent Frank Lundy, played by Keith Carradine. He’s now retired from the FBI, and is back in Miami to catch the one that got away. Yep, you guessed it, the Trinity Killer.

Of course his return means two things, Dexter not thrilled he’s back (Who can blame him, he catches serial killers), and an incredibility awkward reunion with Deborah Morgan.

Speaking of Deborah, she is chasing leads on who her father’s mistress was.

The episode introduced some new faces. The neighbor next door who we’ll be seeing more of this season. We also meet reporter Christine Hill, who has a sudden interest with one of the characters. Speaking of “interest”, there’s a surprising, yet not so surprising new office-romance. Any guesses?

If anything, this packed season premiere got me even more excited about the upcoming season. It will be interesting to see how Dexter juggles his family-life, and his “needs”.

Before the episode ends, things are flipped upside down, leaving the viewers hanging for the next episode.

Season 4 of Dexter begins on Sunday September 27th, 2009.
