Advance Review: ABC “Modern Family” – The Next Great Comedy
The great TV Comedy doesn’t come along to often. You have your Frasier, your Seinfeld, and your Friends. Today, there’s The Office and How I Met Your Mother.
But the great comedy is rare these days with Reality-TV and Drama dominating the networks.
This fall, ABC will premiere “Modern Family”, and dare I say… the next great comedy!
The show is a mockumentry following the life of three different families. You have your “traditional family” with Phil and Claire. They have been married for 16 years and have three kids. You have your interracial newlyweds, Jay and Gloria, who have a huge age gap. Finally you have your same-sex couple, Mitchell and Cameron, who just adopted a baby girl from Vietnam.
The key to a great comedy starts with the cast. This cast not only has some familiar faces, such as Ed O’Neil (Married… with Children) and Julie Bowen (Boston Legal), but everyone is funny. Everyone! The cast also has great chemistry together, which is something every great comedy has.
Picking a favourite character is very hard to do, but if I had to chose, I would pick Phil, played by Ty Burrell.
Phil is the self-proclaimed “cool dad”. See for yourself.
“ I’m a cool dad, that’s my thing. I’m hip, I surf the web, I text, ’lol’- laugh out loud, ‘omg’ – oh my god, ‘wtf’ – why the face. I know all the dances to High School Musical”
This comedy pilot is the funniest show I’ve seen in years. Great cast, and non-stop laughs. Not to mention a twist near the end of the first episode, where we learn these three couples may seem far apart, but they are much closer than we think.
However, on Wednesdays at 9 pm ET, it faces tough competition. Criminal Minds on CBS, Law & Order: SVU on NBC, and Glee/Human Target on FOX will be going up against ABC’s Modern Family.
I urge you all to watch this show when it premieres this September. Don’t let the next great comedy get buried.
