T.R. Knight Opens Up On His “Grey’s Anatomy” Exit

It’s been two months since the news that T.R. Knight was leaving the ABC hit drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Now he talks about his exit to Entertainment Weekly.

Knight states there were several factors to his decision to leave. He says “a breakdown in communication” between him and Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes played a big part. The actor also says that Rhimes tried to discourage him from coming out soon after Isaiah Washington used an anti-gay slur on 2006.

After the incident with Washington, Knight’s character George O’Malley was getting less screen time starting in Season 5.

“There just comes a time when it’s so clear that moving on is the best decision,” Knight told EW. “No other series regular’s character had ever disappeared like mine did.”

Unsure about O’Malley’s fate after the cliff-hanger during the past season finale, Rhimes wanted him back, but only in flash-backs. This was when T.R. Knight asked out of his contract.

“My five-year experience proved to me that I could not trust any answer that was given [about George's future],” he said. “And with respect, I’m going to leave it at that.”

T.R. Knight has already picked up a new gig post-Grey’s Anatomy. He will be starring in a play called “Parade” starting in September, and in February of 2010, he will be retuning to Broadway in “Lend Me a Tenor”.

The sixth season of Grey’s Anatomy will begin on September 24th on ABC and CTV.
