Nod of the Head, Shake of the Fist – Emmy Nominations Edition

By: Adam Wright

Now that we know the nominations, the wait begins for the Emmy Awards in September.

But it’s never too early to pass judgement. So nominees, prepare to be judged! This is “Nod of the Head, shake of the fist” -  Emmy Edition.

This is the premiere edition of “N.O.T.H.S.O.M.F” on TVDoneWright.com, but my loyal readers will recognize this segment from my column in The Aquinian (St Thomas University Newspaper).

(Disclaimer: For the record this writer denies any similarities between this segment, and the one from a certain late night Report host. A wag of my finger goes to those who don’t buy it!)

How this will work, I will go through the main categories, and then unleash my unfiltered fury! Fasten your seat-belts folks.

The first category in my sights is Outstanding Drama Series. In this category, 5 out of 7 of the nominees are Cable Shows. Which tells you one thing, if you want to watch great TV, you’re going to have to dish out the cash!

A nod of the head for this category goes to Dexter. The show is about the serial killer with a code. It’s one of the best written shows on TV today, and a personal favourite. In the past season, our favourite serial killer learns that he will be a daddy and gets married. Not bad for a good who says he feels nothing. Hopefully they get the win. I mean… do we really want to piss this guy off?

Unfortunately a shake of the fist goes to True Blood. But what, you say they weren’t nominated? EXCATLY! How did this show get snubbed, which House gets another nod after its worst season to date? Whoever nominated House for this past season should join him in the loony bin.

Moving on, the next category is Outstanding Comedy Series.

A nod of the head goes to Family Guy in this category. Look, I’ll be the first to say that Family Guy has been going downhill these past seasons. However, you can’t deny this accomplishment. They’ve done what The Simpsons have tried to do but failed. They made it to the Best Comedy Series category, making them the first ever animated show making it. I don’t expect them to win it, although how awesome would Seth MacFarlane’s speech would be.

In the Best Comedy Series category, shouldn’t a show be funny? A shake of the fist goes to Flight of the Conchords. I know I’m going to get emails about this, but I’m saying it. They are not funny! Even if they are, they are definitely not among the top comedies. The Big Bang Theory for one could of taking its spot easily. Swear to god if they win, I’ll be writing an unfunny song in their honour.

Now we are in the individual categories. First off, Lead Actor in a Comedy.

The category looks like the same old same old, however a big nod of the head goes to Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory for making it. Sure they were snubbed out of best comedy, but this is a great consolation prize.

A shake of my fist goes to Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords. What can I say more… Every network has a bad show in its line-up. This is HBO’s! And please I don’t want to hear “But you don’t get their subtle comedy”. They rank up there with Jimmy Fallon and Dane Cook.

In the Lead Actor in a Drama category, we get a surprising newcomer. Simon Baker of The Mentalist gets his for nomination in his first season. But he still gets a shake of my fist. As much is I like a new nominee, I would have put Fringe’s John Noble before him. He plays the crazy scientist perfectly.

By the way, another shake of my fist for snubbing Kiefer Sutherland of 24. First off, it’s freaking Jack Bauer. Second, he just came off the best season in a long time. To see them get snubbed in both Best Drama and Best Actor category should be federal offence!

Now for the Lead Actress in a Comedy category.

I’m pleased to give a nod of the head to Tina Fey of 30 Rock. She is one of the most talented women on TV, and should get her props. Whether she’s playing Liz Lemon on Thursday nights or Sarah Palin on Saturday nights, you know she’ll be hilarious. If she wins, I hope she thanks the former-Gov. of Alaska. How funny would that be!

Finally, Lead Actress in a Drama.

A big shake of my fist for another big snub… Anna Paquin of True Blood. What’s up with the lack of respect True Blood is getting? It gets top DVD sales; record ratings on HBO; one of the most talked about shows… but still gets snubbed. I seriously don’t get. Maybe the Academy hates vampires. Damn those discriminatory bastards!

I want to finish on a high note, so my final nod of the head goes to Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order: SVU. If a show had a MVP, she would be it. NBC should thank their lucky stars they re-signed her and Chris Meloni. Losing them would of killed their top rated drama, and God knows they can’t afford to lose more viewers.

Well folks, there you have it! Judgement was made, now we wait. Thanks for reading, and make sure to tune in for another edition of “Nod of the Head, Shake of the fist”.

True Blood is a stupid show on tv. Never heard of this concords or whatever. 24 doesn’t get nominated and that’s why the emmys are a joke.

Seems like a lot of the good shows are not receiveing enough credit. True Blood, great series, lots of talk about it.
