Thursday Night Fights: FOX Moves "Fringe" To Challenge CSI and Grey's

Today during FOX’s upfront event, it released next season’s fall schedule. In what’s the day’s biggest surprise was the move of a hit show to a new day.

In what I think is a ballsy move, the network will move the sci-fi hit Fringe to Thursday nights at 9 pm ET.

Thursday nights at 9 pm ET! Yes, that’s the same timeslot as ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and CBS’s CSI.

At first glance, this looks like a huge mistake, putting a show entering its second season against two rating giants. But if you take a deeper look, you’ll see that this might be the best time for FOX to make this move.

For years, CSI and Grey’s Anatomy have been battling out for the top rated scripted-show on TV. But as of late, both shows have been on the decline. CSI recently got its lowest ratings ever during its season finale last week. Grey’s Anatomy has also been on the decline, and with two possible exits next season, the ratings could fall even more.

Fringe on the other hand has been constantly one of the top rated shows in its first season. So can thy do it? Can they topple the giants?

If you remember a few years back, CSI was reigning supreme. Then one day a fairly show new went up against them, and has beaten them pretty much ever since. Of course I’m talking about Grey’s Anatomy.

Granted Grey’s and Fringe are two totally different shows, but it isn’t as farfetched to think a new show can topple two juggernauts.

Of course, all this will depend on what ABC and CBS will do. Recently, CBS boss said that CSI will destroy Jay Leno in the ratings. Does this mean he plans on moving CSI to the 10 pm ET timeslot? Or did he mean the spin-offs, CSI Miami and CSI NY?

Nonetheless, it’s great to see a network making a bold move as FOX did. It shows it has confidence in its show, and it is taking advantage of the opportunity.

I look forward to the battle between Fringe, Grey’s Anatomy and CSI on Thursday nights.
