American Idol Scores Ratings Low, A Sign of Things To Come?

Idol-Lambert-Allen_dl

Last night’s season finale of American Idol has it all. It had some star-filled line-up, it had some funny moments, it featured some of the past contestant, heck we even saw one of the judges strip down to her bikini! The night was capped off by the shocking upset win by Kris Allen, your new American Idol.

With all these elements, the show scored its lowest ratings during a finale in eight seasons. Ouch! That has to hurt.

There could be many reasons why the ratings were so low. It could be because there were other season finales during the broadcast, including a two-hour Criminal Minds on CBS. Maybe it was because a lot of people thought they knew who was going to win, and just didn’t tune in.

Or the reason could be that the Idol show that’s been a ratings giant for over eight years now, it may be on its decline.

It was bound to happen folks, how many more years of Idol does FOX have left in them?

Next year’s season has many question marks already. Will we see all four judges back?

The four judge format was introduced this season, and it has been criticized for taking too much of the airtime. Could the show be scaling back to three judges?

And how about all these rumours we’ve been hearing. Is Kara leaving? Is Paula leaving? Or more significant, is Simon leaving?

With three other shows in Britain, Simon has expressed that his time on Idol might soon come to an end. This would hand the show a huge blow. Many of the viewers tune in to see what Simon has to say.

But this season, Simon has looked uninspired. So maybe it is his time to go.

What about the Adam Lambert factor? Lambert was considered by many to be the best singer on the competition. But he still lost. Even Kris himself said “Adam should of won”.

Were people swayed off by his style, or his sexual orientation? We’ll never know for sure. But the fact that the best singer did not win this year could alienate many viewers.

There are many factors weighing in. But one thing is for sure is that ratings are declining. And with the future of the judges in question, how much longer can the show survive?

It is important to note that American Idol is still the most watched show on TV. But it is only a matter of time… What comes up must come down.

They need something new. Maybe duets? Something interesting

They did duets one week. Let’s just say… it didn’t work for one team Kris and Danny), it worked for the other (Adam and Alison).

You’re right, what goes up must come down, however people have been predicting a huge decline of Idol for quite some time now. Yes, ratings were down some, but so were ratings for most of the Big 4 network shows on television this year. Regardless, I have no doubt that Idol will be the #1 show on television again next year, and depending on what Simon does after that, it could stay #1 for another season or two.

I say American Idol will loose millions of viewers after finding out that “IT’S NOT A SINGING COMPETITION!”

it was nice to *see* Megan Joy again, wasn’t so nice to hear her again… reminded me of how glad i was to see some of those “top 13″ get voted off

I didn’t watch because the thought of a mediocre singer like Kris Allen winning American Idol had no appeal to me at all.

Take all of the above reasons, but the biggest one is simple. The most talented person to have ever been on the show did not win. Suffice it to say, this years finale was the last Idol I will be watching.

The finale was a great show! Had some really good performances.

Agree with all my heart. However, I might be watching the next season to see how good the talent will be but I have doubts.

Please cite the source of Kris’ quote, “Adam should of won”. I have watched or listened to all of the interviews availabe (as far as I know). I would like to know when he stated this because I haven’t heard it. Kris has said “Adam deserves this” and “Adam deserved this just as much as I did”. Those statements do not equate to ‘Adam should have won”. Just because somebody derserves something doesn’t mean they will get it. They both deserved it, but there can only be one winner. That winner is Kris. Please post where you heard or saw this quote because I would like to see it myself. If you just twisted his words, please remove the quotation marks because that is slander.
